“The Claddagh Brooch and The Asylum Seeker are masterpieces of short fiction.

Other superb reads include The Marvellous Singing Apple, Mark Got Clever, and Ghosts; and while Jed is Dead beautifully evokes mystery on the Riviera, with an ice-cream on the lungomare – fruits of the forest and stracciatella – the grimy pub story, Uh-Oh, pungently evokes a bunch of middle-aged rock enthusiasts, full of memorable lines.

Great characters include Guillame Cornilleau, who sets down his wheelbarrow to watch a coffin lowered into a grave, and pulls us into a web of mystery; Charlotte Levie the school boiler; Cedric and Katie staggering off the last train; a singular poltergeist; a penguin/parrot hybrid; Josh the fitness instructor; and the virtue-intact girls who lunch on Kunzel cakes and a bottle of coke…”
